Braces
Brackets attached to the teeth and a wire the orthodontist adjusts over time, for teens and adults whose teeth and bite need steady, controlled movement.
Dr. Jafari decides whether braces, aligners or something else fits your teeth after an exam and records. The brackets can be metal or tooth-colored, and we show you both at the records visit.

What happens
- 01
Step 1: Records visit
Photos, a scan or impressions, and X-rays if Dr. Jafari needs them. You hear what she sees and what your options are.
- 02
Step 2: Putting braces on
The brackets are attached to clean, dry teeth and the first wire goes in, in one visit.
- 03
Step 3: Adjustment visits
You come back for wire changes and checks. Treatment usually runs from about a year to a little over two, depending on your teeth and on how you follow instructions. Results vary.
- 04
Step 4: Braces come off
The brackets are removed, your teeth are cleaned and you start wearing a retainer.
What to know before you start
Comfort
Braces don't need numbing. Teeth can feel sore for a few days after the first wire and after some adjustments. Soft food helps. If a bracket rubs, we show you how to use orthodontic wax.
Alternatives, and waiting
Clear aligners suit some bites, and Dr. Jafari tells you honestly when they would not. If you wait, crowded teeth or a bite that does not meet can stay as they are or change with time; she explains what she expects for yours.
Risks and after-care
Plaque left around brackets can mark teeth or cause cavities, and gums can swell. Roots can shorten slightly for some people. Dr. Jafari explains the risks at the first visit and again before treatment starts. After-care is brushing and flossing as shown, avoiding hard and sticky foods, and wearing your retainer as directed.
How it is billed
You get a written estimate before treatment. Dental plans that include orthodontics may pay part of it.

Questions about braces
Can adults get braces?
Yes. Many of our patients are adults. Dr. Jafari checks your gums and teeth first.
What if a bracket comes loose?
Call us. We tell you what to do and when to come in. There is a page on it under Treatments.
Do I still see my family dentist?
Yes, for cleanings and cavities. Brushing takes longer around brackets, so keep those visits.
Who decides between braces and aligners?
You and Dr. Jafari, after the exam. She tells you what she recommends and why.
